The Hitman’s Bodyguard was directed by Patrick Hughes and written by Tom O’Connor. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek.
Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) was a triple A bodyguard until losing a high profile client. Now he has found himself lower on the bodyguard food chain protecting coked up attorneys and low lives.
The ruthless and bloodthirsty dictator of Belarus Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) is standing trial at the International Court of Justice for crimes against humanity. The prosecution is having trouble prosecuting the dictator because all of the witnesses keep dying.
Hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) is the courts last hope. Interpol is charged with transporting Kincaid to the hearing, but things go south fast during transport. Agent Amelia Roussel calls in her ex-boyfriend Michael Bryce.
It turns out Bryce and Kincaid have a colorful history of trying to kill each other, which sets the tone for the rest of the movie. So not to spoil it, we’ll move onto the review from here.
Kind of hard to go wrong when you put 2 actors like Reynolds and Jackson together. I knew this movie had hit written all over it the first time I saw the trailer. This review will be graded on the following 6 factors. You can see the scores at the bottom of the post.
The story was written very well, and is as triple A as Bryce’s bodyguard business. It keeps your full attention from the beginning to the end.
With a star studded cast featuring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek its hard to go wrong.
The action scenes are top notch in this movie. Sometimes Kincaid is a little to casual in the heat of action, but I guess that is the picture they are trying to paint for his character. Since they are trying to get somewhere, you can expect a lot of running & Gunning scenes.
The comedy was pretty on point, but if you’ve seen as many movies with these two staring actors as I have, then you might be getting a little tired of their style. I’m a big fan of Reynolds and Jackson, so I’m surprised I’m saying that. I think the comedy was written in great, Maybe I’m just getting tired of MotherF’n snarky comedy.
Usually to intensify the storyline, every action movie has to be balanced with tear jerking drama. The film does have its small share of drama, but I think it did better in the action and comedy departments.
Brutality can be grouped into action, but I feel this movie should get some recognition for the gore scale. They blend the gore in with the action and comedy, so you hardly notice just how bloody this movie is. Once again, I love Hayek’s brutal fight scene in Honduras.
Going into the movie I had high expectations. Its obviously a big budget flick with big name actors. I love action and comedy. When blended right I think the combined 2 genres make for my favorite type of movie. The movie captivated me the whole way through, and in the end I thought it was excellent.
